Heat your home - Help the reserve! An important part of management work on the reserve involves controlling the spread of scrub on the dunes and wetlands. Teams of staff and volunteers work on the dunes each winter to keep areas of dunes an open landscape. Maintaining open areas helps support dune habitats and species such as brown hare, skylark, meadow pipit and lapwing.
Logs are brought back to the reserve centre to dry. Most of the timber is birch but other hardwoods including hawthorn, willow, holly and oak are occasionally harvested.
Wood is dried on racks constructed from timber recycled when repairing old boardwalks. We attempt to make the best use of space whilst maintaining good ventilation to help dry the timber.
